Course Title:    Pop/Rock Ensemble

Course Length:         One Semester (5 credits)

Grade Level:     10th - 12th

Prerequisite:    Audition/Teacher Approval, 2.0 GPA performance requirement; Parent must attend mandatory meeting and must participate and support activities.

The Pop/Rock ensemble is one of the premiere performing ensembles at The School of Arts and Enterprise.  Students will be encouraged to explore popular music that is relevant to their lives in a way that is educational and authentic to rock history.  All students will be required to perform on either guitar, bass, drums, piano, and/or vocals.

 

Course Title:    Piano

Course Length:         One Year (10 credits)

Grade Level:     9th - 12th

Prerequisite:    None

Students will learn the basic fundamentals of music, which includes learning how to read music.  Beginners will learn basic piano techniques; intermediate students will learn more advanced piano techniques. Keyboards will be provided.

 

Course Title:    Instrumental Methods

Course Length:         One Year (10 credits)

Grade Level:     10th – 12th

Prerequisite: Music Foundations

Students will learn the fundamentals of wind and percussion instrumental performance.  Instrumental Methods builds upon the students' foundational knowledge of music theory and prepares them for a performance based ensemble.  All students will be expected to learn percussion techniques and develop faculty on one of the following instruments: trumpet, trombone, or saxophone.

 

Course Title:    Music Theory

Course Length:         One Year (10 credits)

Grade Level:     11th - 12th

Prerequisite:    Teacher Approval

This Music Theory course is an in-depth study of the fundamental elements of music and promotion of fluency and quickness with basic music materials, integrating the study of melody, harmony, texture, rhythm, and form.  Study will include the analysis of notated examples, the development and acquisition of aural (listening) skills, sight singing, keyboard harmony, part writing and harmonization.  The student who successfully completes such a course should be able to recognize and describe basic materials and processes of music as performed, composed or presented in score. 

 

Course Title:    Wind Ensemble

Course Length:         One Semester (5 credits)

Grade Level:     10th - 12th

Prerequisite:    Audition/Teacher Approval, 2.0 GPA performance requirement; Parent must attend mandatory meeting and must participate and support activities.

The Wind Ensemble is a small chamber ensemble focused on developing students' musicianship and instrumental faculty.  The Wind Ensemble is a performance-based ensemble and performs arrangements of works spanning the gamut of music history.

 

Course Title:    Jazz Ensemble

Course Length:         One Semester (5 credits)

Grade Level:     10th - 12th

Prerequisite:    Audition/Teacher Approval, 2.0 GPA performance requirement; Parent must attend mandatory meeting and must participate and support activities.

This class is designed for intermediate to advance instrumentalists. Students must be able to read music or tabs (guitar & bass). Students should have some experience in their instrument. Authorization from instructor is required. Students should have their own instrument. If student does not have their own instrument, check with instructor for arrangements to use one. After school rehearsal is a required component of the course.

 

Course Title:    Vocal Ensemble (Choir)

Course Length:         One Year (10 credits) meets requirement “F” for CSU/UC

Grade Level:     9th - 12th

Prerequisite:    None; 2.0 GPA performance requirement; Parent must attend mandatory meeting and must participate and support activities. 

This class focuses on solo and choral singing in all genres including Classical, Broadway, Pop, Jazz, Rock, and R&B. Students learn basic music history, theory, sight singing, basic piano and vocal and microphone techniques, as well as stage presence as they workshop songs, evaluate themselves and one another and observe professional music performances. Students will be required to perform at school functions.
