Course Title: Fundamentals of Art
Course Length: One Year, meets requirement "F" for CSU/UC
Grade Level: 9th - 12th (9th grade requirement Incoming 10th - 12th may select this class.)
Prerequisite: None


This is a UC approved, standards-based course that fulfills the fine arts graduation requirement while providing a foundation for the students who wish to pursue art in depth. This course introduces the elements of art, the principles of design, and the relationship of the visual arts to daily living. The course is designed to explore fundamental art process, teach basic art skills and survey historical art concepts. A combination of the four components of art education will be addressed; production, criticism, history and aesthetics. Students will use creative problem solving and critical thinking to produce various projects. Projects are designed to develop self-awareness, self-motivation, self-expression and self-esteem.


Course Title: Ceramics I
Course Length: One Year, meets requirement "F" for CSU/UC
Grade Level: 10th - 12th
Prerequisite: Lab Fee


This course is an introduction to a variety of three-dimensional art using clay as the primary medium. A range of construction techniques will be covered in addition to producing both functional and sculptural ceramic work. Students will explore historical and contemporary work as well as traditional and alternative methods of producing wares.


Course Title: Ceramics II
Course Length: One Year, meets requirement "F" for CSU/UC
Grade Level: 10th - 12th
Prerequisite: Completion of Ceramics I with a C grade or higher Lab Fee


This course is a continuation of Ceramics I. In addition to a range of hand building, and glazing techniques, students will learn how to throw a piece on a potter's wheel. Students will continue to explore historical and contemporary work as well as traditional and alternative methods of producing wares. Students will produce both functional and sculptural ceramic work.


Course Title: Ceramics III
Course Length: One Year, meets requirement "F" for CSU/UC
Grade Level: 10th - 12th
Prerequisite: Completion of Ceramics II with a C grade or higher Lab Fee


This is semester-long course where students will primarily work on individual work. Students will create sculptural pieces that will become part of a whole body of work. Students in Ceramics III will photograph their work for their portfolio and exhibit their work at the SAE student show in May.


Course Title: Mosaics Design
Course Length: One Semester
Grade Level: 10th - 12th
Prerequisite: Lab Fee


Students will gain the ability to design and execute works with mosaic tiles and found objects. The course will also investigate the historical and cultural significance of the French mosaic art form "pique assiette" and memory ware.


Course Title: Portfolio & Illustration
Course Length: One Year
Grade Level: 10th - 12th
Prerequisite: Completion of Drawing/'Painting with a C grade or higher Lab Fee


This class is for advanced art students to prepare their portfolios for art school admissions. Students will build upon previously acquired skills and experiences, advanced students learn to work independently, generating their own artistic ideas and projects. Students present their work in a critique format, where they are expected to explain their work and participate in an open discussion about it. Final evaluation will be a structured portfolio.


Course Title: Digital Photography I
Course Length: One Semester
Grade Level: 10th -11th
Prerequisite: Lab Fee and Digital Camera


Photo students will explore the elements and principles of design as they apply to the art of photography. The students will learn composition, lighting, and value through the lens. Students also will be introduced to photo editing software, such as, Photoshop and Illustrator.


Course Title: Costume Construction and Design
Course Length: One Semester
Grade Level: 10th - 12th
Prerequisite: Lab Fee


This is an introductory sewing and design class that will focus on learning the basic skills required to design and build clothing, costumes and fashion. Students will learn skills such as cutting, stitching, draping and design.


Course Title: Painting I
Course Length: One Semester
Grade Level: 10th - 12th
Prerequisite: Lab Fee


This course is an introduction to handling materials, mixing paint, color theory, tonal values, light and shadow, and studio practices. This course will be evaluated on still life projects, class exercises, class critiques, and projects.


Course Title: Painting II
Course Length: One Semester
Grade Level: 10th - 12th
Prerequisite: Lab Fee


This is an intermediate level painting and design class. Students will explore the elements and principals of design and complete both individual compositions and collaborative projects. Painting techniques in tempera, acrylic, and water-based medial will be explored. Historic and contemporary art styles will be studied and applied to original artworks. Students will be encouraged to find their own personal vision through painted media.


Course Title: Drawing I
Course Length: One Semester
Grade Level: 10th - 12th
Prerequisite: Lab Fee


This course is an introduction and application of the most basic of all visual art forms. In order to create and explore artistic expression, you must learn the fundamentals. Students will study the basic techniques of line drawing, shading, proportions, and perspective as they pertain to portraiture, still life, landscapes, and figurative drawing.


Course Title: Drawing II
Course Length: One Semester
Grade Level: 10th - 12th
Prerequisite: Completion of Drawing I with a C grade or higher Lab Fee


In this class students will expand upon techniques learned in Drawing I. Students will explore line drawing, shading, and perspective as they pertain to portraiture, still life, landscape, and figure drawing. Students will explore different mediums in drawing including pencil, charcoal, and ink. An emphasis will be placed on composition. Art preparation for display and competitive exhibit will be encouraged


Course Title: Mural Design
Course Length: One Semester
Grade Level: 10th - 12th
Prerequisite: Previous painting experience is required.Lab Fee


The Mural Class is an artistic opportunity to transform the empty spaces throughout our beautiful campus into creatively enhanced spaces. This class is designed for students to work collaboratively and cooperatively together on artistic designs and images that will be transferred into large wall paintings. The Mural Class incorporates the student's group effort along with art and design principles, painting techniques and artistic expression to formulate high quality fine art murals that will be displayed for everyone to see.
